Vitamin Extraction from Kakadu Plum
نویسندگان
چکیده
Kakadu plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) is a native Australian fruit which is known to have very high concentrations of phytochemicals, including vitamin C concentrations of up to 100 times that contained in oranges. However, due to a combination of factors including the size, texture and flavour of the fruit as well as product and supply variability, it has not found widespread use in the food industry. For example, the fibrous nature of its flesh means the fruit is not easily juiced. The purpose of this study was to develop a small scale solid-liquid extraction of phytochemicals from Kakadu plum that could be used by the food industry to produce value added products, such as beverages. The approach taken was to carry out laboratory extractions and analyse the extracts for Vitamin C, in order to produce data that can be used to model an extraction. A mathematical model has been developed and model parameters have been found for the vitamin C extraction experiments that were carried out. This model and the calculated parameters have been used to model both equilibrium and non-equilibrium extractions.

Total RNA extraction method and Prunus species influence the detection of Plum pox potyvirus by real-time RT-PCR
Successful total RNA (totRNA) extraction is a prerequisite for a successful real-time PCR. In the present work we compared one manual and one automated totRNA extraction method for detection of Plum pox potyvirus (PPV) in leaves of different Prunus sp. using developed real-time RT-PCR assay. Advantages and disadvantages of compared methods are described in the view of sensitivity, reproducibili...
متن کاملCarotenoids, polyphenols and micronutrient profiles of Brassica oleraceae and plum varieties and their contribution to measures of total antioxidant capacity.
The consumption of phytochemicals such as carotenoids and polyphenols within whole fruits and vegetables has been associated with decreased incidence of various inflammation and oxidative stress related chronic diseases, which may be due to direct antioxidant effects, or indirect mechanisms such as affecting signal transduction/gene expression. Within the present study, we investigated the anti...
متن کاملPhysico-chemical characteristics of wild plum fruits (Prunus spinosa L.)
The genotypic variation on physico-chemical characteristics of wild grown plums (Prunus spinosa L.) was investigated. The total phenolic contents were in a range of 117 to 407 mg GAE/100 g FW. The vitamin C was highest in yellow colored fruits (12.10 mg/100 ml). The total soluble solid content varied between 9.40% (yellow colored) and 12.90% (dark purple colored) fruits. Antioxidant activity o...
متن کاملPollinizer Influence on Fruit Quality Traits in Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.)
Most Japanese plum-type cultivars are self-incompatible and therefore cross pollination is necessary to ensure fruit set. Moreover, pollen can directly affect fruit development process and quality. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of 6 pollen sources (‘Goje Sabz’, ‘Simka’, ‘Shablon’, ‘Methley’, ‘Myrobalan’ and ‘Black Star’) on fruit quantitative and qualitative characteris...
